Morocco has called on the European Union to urgently intercede with Algeria to shoulder its responsibilities with regard to protecting Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud, his family and his relatives against reprisals by polisario.

The call was made by Morocco's ambassador to the EU, Menouar Alem, to high-level European officials, including Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, Jerzy Buzek, speaker of the European parliament, Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission and Catherine Ashton, High representative of the EU for the Foreign affairs and security policy, as well as Steven Vanackere, Belgian deputy prime minister and foreign minister, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU.

The diplomat stressed the need to remind Algeria of its legal, political and moral responsibility with regard to preserving the physical integrity and dignity of Ould Sidi Mouloud and the members of his family, in accordance with human rights principles as they are universally recognized.

Alem said “Morocco holds Algeria responsible for the fate of Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud,” it being the host country of the population of the Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria).

In view of the legal obligations that fall to Algeria, he went on, Morocco flatly rejects fallacious excuses and arguments advanced by the Polisario to justify its atrocities, and by Algeria to shirk its responsibilities vis-à-vis the international community, he said.

The diplomat, who vigourously denounced this “extremely serious act” perpetrated by Polisario in league with the Algerian authorities against Ould Sidi Mouloud, reiterated the Kingdom’s call for his immediate release and noted that Morocco is concerned about the direct danger looming over his physical integrity and the safety of his family and relatives in the camps.
