Spain reiterated, on Tuesday, its support for searching for a "just and lasting" solution for the Sahara issue under the aegis of the United Nations.

Spain is striving to find "a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution" for the Sahara issue under the aegis of the United Nations, Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said before the Spanish Senate (upper house).

"We are striving to reach an appropriate settlement for the Sahara issue through diplomatic means," said Moratinos, reaffirming his country's support for efforts made by the UNSG's Personal Envoy for the Sahara Christopher Ross to find a solution for this dispute.

In the same vein, Moratinos said that "a better Maghreb integration means development in the economic and social fields, as well as in terms of security in the Sahel region."

The Spanish official underlined his government's "disapproval" of the actions of some Spanish activists "who do not abide by the domestic laws" of Morocco, alluding to the participation of a group of Spanish nationals in an unauthorized demonstration in Laayun.
