Portugal considers that "such a solution requires that the parties show realism and a spirit of compromise and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue in order to engage more in substantive negotiations," the statement added.
"The Portuguese party reiterated in this context the importance of serious and credible efforts to promote a political solution to this issue."
In this regard, "Lisbon welcomes the Moroccan initiative, presented on April 11, 2007, to the UN Secretary General," the same source said.
Morocco and Portugal "reaffirmed their strong support for the efforts of the Security Council, UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy, for a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.”
The two parties reiterated their firm commitment to the process of negotiations. In this context, they welcomed the adoption of new guidelines by the Security Council, particularly resolution 1920 of April 30, 2010.
Regarding the situation in the Maghreb, Rabat and Lisbon recall “the strategic, political and economic importance of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) as a framework for cooperation to face many challenges in the region.”
Both parties underlined “the need to give impetus to the integration of the Maghreb through a responsible and constructive dialogue.”
