Former Spanish soldiers expressed Thursday in Rabat, their support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal, describing as the “most applicable” the Moroccan project to settle the Sahara issue.

In an interview with the Secretary General of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), Mr. Abdellah Boussouf, members of the delegation, most of whom coming from the Canary Islands, estimated that autonomy is the best solution that could guarantee stability, indicating that the Canary Islands have no interest to see a micro state in the region.

In a statement to MAP, Miguel Asin Otriz who led the Spanish delegation representing the Spanish officials who were previously in charge of managing the affairs of the Sahara at the colonial era, said the visit to Morocco is an opportunity to see firsthand progress in the southern provinces of the Kingdom.

Mr. Otriz Asin highlighted "the economic and social development" in the region, notably in housing and infrastructure.

He added that conditions in the southern provinces are improved and residents were able to profit from this progress to develop their business and their economic situation.

Gathering all Saharawi families depends on the return of their brothers in Tindouf to their homeland, Morocco, where they can live in a climate of peace, freedom and progress and benefit from the enormous possibilities of autonomy offered by their country, he said.

For his part, Mr. Boussouf emphasized the need to maintain peace and stability in North Africa, stressing in this context the importance of the Moroccan initiative.

This meeting, he indicated, is an opportunity to encourage the initiative of this group who experienced the colonial period and the independence of the Moroccan Sahara.

This group of former Spanish soldiers gathered within a league of defense of the project proposed by Morocco, will play an important role for civil society by raising Spanish public awareness about the reality and progress in the southern provinces, he added.
