Members of a visiting French delegation, including two MPs and leaders of organizations, welcomed on Thursday in the southern city of Dakhla, the relevance of the Moroccan autonomy initiative and the kingdom's efforts to develop the southern provinces.

For Chantal Bourrague, an MP from the UMP party at the French National Assembly, the autonomy initiative which "was appreciated by the international community and welcomed by the United Nations will bring a lot of progress to the region."

Reiterating France's support to the initiative, proposed by Morocco to put an end to the Sahara issue, she deplored "the positions of Algeria and the Polisario that hinder peace efforts in this region."

In a statement to the press, following talks with the Wali of the Oued Eddahab-Lagouira region, governor of the Oued Eddahab province, the French MP highlighted the development projects in the southern provinces and especially in Dakhla.

In a similar statement, Abdoulatifou Ali, Mayotte’s MP at the French National Assembly welcomed “the efforts made by Morocco in the region and the special attention given to the local population,” noting that “the autonomy proposal is the best option” to resolve this issue.

Earlier, the French delegation held talks with deputy director of the regional center of investment, who gave a presentation on the key sectors of the regional economy, programs and investments carried out to provide the region with modern infrastructure and develop local potential.

The delegation also inquired about the infrastructure of Dakhla port and efforts made to promote the fishing industry.
