Peter Pham, who is also a member of the US think tank "National Committee on American Policy", said that the autonomy proposal would not only provide justice to the long-standing historical Moroccan ties with the region, but also assure stability and security in the region.
"It is the only plan that would assure stability and security, which the people of the area, Morocco, its neighbors, and the international community want and need," Pham told MAP on the sidelines of the presentation of his latest article entitled "Not another Failed State: Toward a Realistic Solution in the Western Sahara" at the Council on Foreign Relations.
"In the world we live in today, we cannot permit states that are not viable to exist," he said, adding that political and economic realities show that another non-viable state in the region would be in fact a threat not only to the international community but also to the people forced to live there.
Such an entity "would not be viable, not in the 21st century, with the danger already in the region of extremism, the nexus between extremism and criminality, it would be a threat to everyone," he underlined.
In this article published in "The Journal of the Middle East and Africa", Peter Pham stresses that the Sahara issue is still an obstacle hampering the integration of the AMU countries and the region’s economic progress.
