Morocco's permanent representative to the UN office at Geneva said on Monday that the situation in the Tindouf camps (southwest of Algeria) is a source of concern not only for Morocco, but also for the entire region.

Omar Hilale added that this situation would have disastrous security effects on the Mediterranean region, the Sahel and Southern Europe.

"This is why Morocco denounces the irresponsible attitude of Algeria which jeopardizes regional and international peace and security to have hegemony over the region," he told the 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

He was speaking in response to the Algerian ambassador who raised the situation of human rights in Morocco's southern provinces.

The Moroccan diplomat insisted that the situation in the camps of Tindouf requires the international community to pay special attention for two main reasons. First, the human rights violations perpetrated in the camps for 35 years now, and, second, the destabilization risks involved in this situation.

He cited the facts enumerated by the 2009 HRW report which belies the Algerian diplomat’s statement with regard to the UN agencies’ and international NGOs’ access to the camps.

“This report, which cannot be disputed by my counterpart, confirms that the HRC has poor access to the camps,” he said, adding that the report also calls on Algeria to take steps necessary to guarantee protection enshrined in international conventions to all individuals on its territory.
