Moroccan associations established in Sweden held last weekend, a conference on the Sahara under the theme "Historical Foundations of the Moroccan Sahara.

At this conference, the national question was widely debated including the historical foundations and current developments, said Monday a press release from the Embassy of Morocco in Stockholm.

Participants at the meeting also discussed the Moroccan project of autonomy in the Sahara.

On this occasion, Mr. Lahcen Mahraoui member of the Advisory Council Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) reviewed the various historical stages of the strong links that have always existed between Morocco and its southern provinces, particularly through documents, testimonies and authentic correspondence, available in the archives of some countries and in European national libraries and through the references of the United Nations.

He also said that the founders of dynasties in Morocco were often directly originated  from Sahrawi tribes and the allegiance of the Sahrawi people to Moroccan sultans, throughout the history of Morocco, a country formed in the 9-th century, is further evidence that the Sahara has always been an integral part of the Kingdom.

Mr. Mahraoui presented a briefing last Friday on the Sahara issue to the Department of resolving conflicts within the Swedish University of Uppsala, said the statement.
