UN Secretary-General Personal Envoy Christopher Ross briefed, on Thursday, the members of the Security Council on the latest developments of the Sahara issue.

The briefing, which comes following the recent informal talks held February 10-11 in Armonk (NY), was marked by "a rather positive tone", diplomatic sources told MAP.

The fifteen member states have unanimously expressed their support for Ross in his mission for finding a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, the same sources said.

They also voiced satisfaction with the outcome of the talks and called for the reinforcement of trust measures.

Delegations from Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the polisario took part in the second informal meeting on the Sahara as part of the implementation of UNSC resolutions 1813 and 1871 adopted in April 2008 and April 2009 respectively.

These resolutions call upon all parties to engage in intense and substantial negotiations, while taking account of the efforts made by Morocco since 2006, and showing realism and a spirit of compromise to achieve a political and final solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Since June 2007, four rounds of negotiations were held in Manhasset (NY) in addition to the first informal meeting last August in Austria, a process triggered by Morocco's autonomy initiative for the Sahara.
