Spokesman of the UN Secretary-General Martin Niserky termed as an "important step" the holding of the informal talks on the Sahara, which started Wednesday in the outskirts of New York, in preparation of intense and substantial negotiations.

In a statement aired by Moroccan TV channel 2M, Niserky said these talks are "an important step," but "remain far from the targeted goals."

The two-day set of informal talks on the Sahara is "encouraging" for making progress in this process and launching intense and substantial negotiations, the UN Secretary-General spokesman said.

It is too early to speak of the timing of official negotiations, that is the 5th round, noted Niserky, underlining that UN Secretary-General Personal Envoy for the Sahara Christopher Ross is working seriously with all parties in this respect.
