The observance of human rights in the Tindouf camps is incumbent on Algeria, which cannot "subcontract" this issue to the "Polisario," Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Wednesday in Rabat.

"The observance of human rights in the Tindouf camps is the responsibility of Algeria," said Eric Goldstein, research director for the Middle East and North Africa division at the US-based rights watchdog.

"Algeria cannot subcontract to the Polisario the issue of human rights in the Tindouf camps," located in its territory, he said at the presentation of the HRW 2009 world report.

He said that the NGO has recently drawn the attention of Algeria’s Ambassador in Washington to the responsibility of his country regarding the respect of human rights throughout its territory, including the Tindouf camps.

Goldstein said that HRW is to conduct this year another mission to investigate the situation of human rights in Tindouf, after the one conducted in 2008.

“It is very important because we know that there are no NGOs in Tindouf” which could warn about the situation of human rights there, he said.
