Morocco's autonomy project for the Sahara is a political solution which is in conformity with the international legality and in line with the principle of self-determination since it gives broad prerogatives to local populations, Egyptian news agency MENA said on Saturday.

This autonomy project includes the best conditions to reach a settlement under Morocco's sovereignty, the agency said in an analysis issued on the occasion of the constitutive congress of the international union for supporting the autonomy project in the Moroccan Sahara slated January 23 in Rabat.

This congress seeks to include the civil society in the search for a final solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue on which all Moroccans are unanimous, the agency said, adding that this meeting will enable the civil society's diplomacy to fully play its role and complement the official diplomacy to counter campaigns conducted by the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity.

The agency recalled that the former UN envoy for the Sahara, Peter van Walsum, said that "the independence of the Sahara is not a realistic option," whereas the Moroccan initiative takes account of the aspirations of the Sahara inhabitants by allowing them to manage their own affairs in a democratic way and through elected bodies.

Referring to this conflict, the MENA agency said that the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 1754, calling upon Morocco and the Polisario to engage in direct talks under the auspices of the UN, mark a "strategic turning point."
