Morocco called the European Community (EC) to show "responsibility, discernment and critical hindsight" in front of the "disinformation and denigration" campaign conducted against it by members of an informal inter-group established within European Parliament.

Morocco "totally rejects the allegations of some individuals eager to use disinformation”, reporting "kidnapping, arrest, pressure or violation of international law ", according to a letter from the Ambassador of the Kingdom with the European Communities, Mr. Alem Menouar to the various European institutions a copy of which was received on Tuesday by MAP.

The campaign, said Alem, is part of the strategy of "obstruction methodically implemented by Algeria and Polisario", expressing his astonishment and regret following the "efforts of members of an informal intergroup within the European Parliament against the Kingdom of Morocco, which is working painstakingly for several days to use MEPs on the basis of erroneous information of ill-treatment "allegedly suffered by Moroccan citizens in the southern provinces.

This maneuver is intended to "thwart the political impetus involved under the auspices of the UN, thanks to the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara region as a basis for negotiating a mutually acceptable political solution to this regional dispute" , said Alem.

He wondered about the party receiving the manipulation of foreign media to exploit the legitimate and legal reaction by Moroccan authorities.

"Some instructive answers can certainly be found in the Algerian end, that provides financial support and diplomatic and media supervision to these actions, of which protagonists are just performers'', he said.

Likewise, he stressed the importance for the European community to measure the scope and real political objectives of this "insidious" process in order to divert attention from the real priority including the preservation of the political momentum under the UN auspices, and the lifting of sufferings of populations in the Tindouf camps in south western Algeria, in inhuman conditions.

The responsibility of Algeria in this situation remains unresolved at the political, legal and moral levels especially regarding its obstinacy in refusing the population census of the camps run by Polisario, as noted by the High Commissioner United Nations Refugees during his recent visit to the region to cover the gross violations of human rights perpetrated in the camps of Tindouf, and encourage the diversion of humanitarian assistance, backed by numerous reports, including those of UNHCR, WFP and OLAF, as this aid is given mainly by European citizens, Mr. Alem clarified.

He called on Algeria to "positively" engage in a constructive logic, and get rid, on all the Maghreb issues, of its "widely acknowledged inaction, noted and regretted by the international community."

Given the crucial stage of the negotiation process, the letter adds, Morocco calls on European support, to ask Algeria and Polisario to assume "full responsibility" in putting an end to the dangerous excesses of which they are authors, and which insidiously threaten the political process and, peace and security in the region.

HM King Mohammed VI has repeatedly reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to the process of ongoing negotiations under the UN auspices, and the Kingdom’s commitment for the consolidation of the rule of law and democratic progress," said Alem in this letter to all representatives of European institutions, as well as ambassadors and permanent representatives of member countries in the European Union.
