The Sahara is Moroccan and the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco for the southern provinces serves democracy, said, on Tuesday in Rabat, the president of the Federation of Andalusian Cultural Entities in Catalonia (FECAC).

"Morocco's proposal to grant a statute of broad autonomy to the southern provinces serves democracy," Francisco Garcia Prieto told the press at the end of a meeting with the president of the Mediterranean Alliance of Morocco's Friends (AMAM), Aziz Hicham.

Morocco proposed the autonomy initiative for the Sahara in a bid to put an end to the 34-year dispute over the territory, a former Spanish colony. The initiative was widely described as "serious" and "credible".

Prieto noted that he is visiting Morocco to take part in festivities celebrating the 34th anniversary of Morocco's Green March, celebrated every year on November 6th.

Founded in 1982, the FECAC endeavours to bring together the different cultural entities of Catalonia to promote knowledge of the Andalusian culture.
