Morocco's ambassador in Spain, Omar Azziman said that those in Spain who support the Algerian-backed Polisario separatists sink them into a situation of rigidity, thus preventing any progress towards solving the Sahara dispute.

"I sincerely call on those who support the Sahrawis to think and see if they really want to help them today through the proposal of broad autonomy made by Morocco, or sink them into a situation of rigidity," Azziman told e-paper, Informacion.

Morocco is proposing to grant broad autonomy to its Southern Provinces (The Sahara) to which the Algerian-backed Polisario is laying claims since 1976.

On Moroccan-Spanish ties, the diplomat underlined that "at a time when large-scale cooperation is being built, it is necessary address any issues that can make it fragile," such as immigration.

Azziman was talking to Informacion on the sidelines of the meeting in Cordoba, Spain, of the 25th Congress of Journalists of the Strait, which gathers about 60 journalists from Morocco and Spain.

He said such meetings are “very useful,” voicing hope to see other forums created as they offer, according to him, the best framework for a better knowledge of the reality of each of the two countries.

The four-day congress, which wraps up Sunday, is organised under the theme: “Cooperation between Morocco and Spain: Prospects for the Future”.
