President of the Foreign Affairs Commission in the Portuguese parliament on Tuesday described Morocco's initiative to grant autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, as "very important".

The autonomy proposal is a very important initiative to settle the Sahara issue, Henrique da Rocha De Freitas said following a meeting with Foreign Minister, Taib Fassi Fihri.

Portugal "highly commends" the momentum spurred by the autonomy project initiated by H.M. King Mohammed VI in 2007, De Freitas said, hoping to see the efforts exerted by UNSG Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Christopher Ross, crowned with success to achieve a “fair, gradual and mutually acceptable solution within the framework of the UN.”

The meeting also touched on relations between the Maghreb and the  European Union and the advanced status granted to Morocco by the EU.

The Portuguese MP held earlier separate meetings with Speakers of the Houses of Representatives and Advisors, Mustapha Mansouri and Maâti Benkaddour respectively.
