Morocco's initiative to grant a substantial autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, is a "privileged solution" to settle for good the Sahara issue, visiting U.S. Reverend, Richard Cizik, underlined here on Friday.

The proposal, which lays the basis for a lasting solution to the regional dispute, can serve as an example to settle other conflicts around the world, Rev. Cizik, who is also chairman of the New Evangelicals Association, said at the end of his three-day visit to the southern region of Oued-Eddahab-Lagouira.

Cizik, who pointed out to the failure of the previous proposals to solve the dispute, noted that the "autonomy option is a realistic win-win solution" that will also contribute to solve humanitarian issues and bring together Sahrawi families.

He underscored Morocco's efforts to consolidate sustainable development in its southern provinces, and stressed the role of local authorities and civil society in promoting local development.

In this respect, Rev. Cizik commended Morocco's reforms, which yielded good results in numerous fields, saying that "these reforms have made of Morocco an example for developing countries."

On his part, Chairman of the U.S. association, Friendship Caravan, Kirtley Timothy, said Morocco offers a real opportunity to move ahead towards a lasting settlement of the Sahara issue.

During their visit Cizik and Kirtleyn held a series of meetings with several local officials in the region of Oued-Eddahab-Lagouira.
