Morocco's proposal to grant broad autonomy to the Kingdom's Southern Provinces, the Sahara, is a "bold initiative that must be supported," said, Friday, the former president of the autonomous government of the Canary Islands, Lorenzo Olarte Cullen.

The autonomy status will make it possible to speed up the development and growth pace in the Southern Provinces, said Olarte Cullen during a meeting with the wali (super governor) of the Laayoune-Boujdour-Sakia-El Hamra region.

Olarte highlighted, in a statement to the press following the meeting, the "impressive development" in the city of Laayoune which "has greatly evolved and witnessed major changes."

He also underlined the reforms undertaken by Morocco under the leadership of king Mohammed VI in various fields, particularly in the area of human rights.

Olarte, who leads a delegation to Laayoune, lauded the strong relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands.

The delegation got acquainted with the projects being carried out in several areas and the latest developments in the Sahara issue.
