The delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, which is currently visiting the United States of America, continued on Thursday September 28, 2006 in Washington, its contacts with members of Congress and officials of a number of study centers and cultural institutions.


The delegation led by the President of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid met with members of Congress, and held a meeting with Senator Mel Martinez, which was attended by the Ambassador of Morocco in Washington, Mr. Aziz Mekouar and members of the Senator Office.

    In the context of these contacts, the delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs met last Wednesday at the White House with Eliot Abrams Assistant Counsel of the National Security Council, in charge of the Middle East and the strategy for inclusive democracy, as well as Gray Gordon Assistant Deputy Secretary of State in charge of the Middle East, Arab Maghreb.

    The delegation held working sessions with officials of a number of counseling and expertise centers based in Washington. During these meetings, which took place at the Congress, members praised autonomy in the Southern regions proposed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, noting that this formula coincides with the ideals of democracy as universally recognized, and represents "outstanding contribution" to the settlement of the Sahara issue.

    Ms Ileana Ros, Florida representative and member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said "We will continue to work to help Morocco resolve the Sahara issue," noting on the other hand, that the "proposal of self-government is consistent with the principles that the United States is seeking to consolidate."

   During these meetings, the Chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, outlined the task of the Council and autonomy that is “consistent with the standards of democracy, pluralism and respect for human rights, and represents the best solution to this issue, since it preserves the sovereignty of Morocco and gives people the possibility of handling their own affairs.

    The delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs comprised, Mr. Ould Khalihenna Ould Errachid, Secretary-General, Mr. Maoulainain ben Khalihenna, Ms. Kalthoum Khayti and Gajmoula bent Abi, Moulay Hasna Chrif, Abd al-Aziz Aba, Othman Aila, Omar Bouida, Khaddad Moussaoui, Ali Salem Chakkef and Moulay Ahmed Mghizlat.
