International community should push Algeria and Polisario to serious negotiations for a final settlement

The exploitation by Algeria of the Sahara regional conflict was exposed during a recent conference in Copenhagen (Denmark) by the Danish United Nations Association (UNA Danish) and Metropolitan University College.

Originally intended to support the positions of Algeria and Polisario separatists, the conference ended in failure to the opponents of the territorial integrity of Morocco, following the speeches by two Sahrawi actors.

Lahcen Mahraoui

Lahcen Mahraoui member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs and spokesman of the Association of Moroccan Saharan tribes in Europe (ATSME) and Shaibata Mrabihrabou Malainine, associative actor, spoke at the meeting to expose allegations by Algeria and Polisario separatists who continue to refuse to engage in serious negotiations with the sole purpose to prolong this artificial conflict and thus to extend the suffering of the people held against their will in camps in the region of Tindouf on Algerian soil.

Both speakers emphasized, in this context, that the Moroccan autonomy initiative provides the best basis for these negotiations with a win-win solution for Sahrawis to manage their own affairs under Moroccan sovereignty.

This solution, based on the autonomy initiative, will also help to end the ordeal of the sequestrated in Tindouf camps and revive the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) as a strategic choice dictated by the new international reality, they said at the conference with the participation of 150 people.

Both speakers also raised the issue of the use by some parties of human rights in the Sahara for political purposes. They cited the case of RF Kennedy Center, who refuses to date, according to them, to respond to an open letter by ATSME about allegations concerning the situation of human rights in the Sahara.

Both associative actors, subsequently presented to the audience, documents, testimonies and letters attesting the Moroccan Sahara, with reference to the allegiance of the Sahrawi people to Moroccan Sultans throughout Moroccan history.

In this context, they stressed that Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara was enshrined in the conventions and treaties signed between Morocco and foreign powers which have always used kings of Morocco to protect the activities of their citizens in the Sahara.

They noted , in this regard , agreements between Morocco and the United States in 1786, England in 1801 and Spain in 1869.

Algeria and Polisario continue to ignore these historical truths , both speakers stressed , noting that opponents of the territorial integrity of Morocco are trying to prolong the status quo , using various methods of procrastination , by exploiting the issue of human rights in the Moroccan Sahara and clinging to a referendum abandoned by the UN in the early 2000s.

In addition, the two speakers did not fail to note that the Moroccan Sahara was in fact recognized by several senior Algerian officials, who lamented their country 's involvement in this issue.

They thus quoted former Algerian President Mohamed Boudiaf for whom the Sahara conflict has no reason to exist, and who stressed that the anti -Maghreb Polisario should not rely on the help and support of Algeria .

After demonstrating the merits of the position of Morocco on the Sahara issue , both associative actors called on the international community to push Algeria and Polisario to engage in serious negotiations to reach a final settlement conflict that threatens the security not only in North Africa but also in Europe , based on the Moroccan initiative qualified as serious and credible by the security Council in all its resolutions since 2007.
