Algeria has "sacrificed" its ties with Morocco and the building of the Maghreb for the sake "of pursuing a hegemonic strategy and creating instability" in the region, said Vice-President of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), Khadad El Moussaoui, on Wednesday in the UN headquarters in New York.

"Algeria's responsibility in creating and supporting the artificial dispute over the Sahara has become known to everyone. It created and hosted a group, the polisario, which it armed to serve its interests in the region, sacrificing its relations with the Kingdom and the building of the Maghreb to pursue a hegemonic strategy and create instability in the region”, underlined Moussoud during a meeting of the UN 4th Committee.

He added that Algeria, aware that its vile strategy was laid bare, uses the noble cause of human rights to attempt at tarnishing Morocco’s achievements in advocating and defending human rights in the region.

El Moussaoui urged the international community to secure a “free access” of the international organizations and NGOs to the Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria).

These organizations should be enabled to investigate the human rights violations perpetrated in the camps by the polisario against dissident Sahrawis, he said, referring to the case of several Sahrawis who recently fled the torture imposed in the camps and joined their homeland, Morocco.

El Moussaoui also pointed to the case of Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud, who was abducted for the only reason of defending Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

“The Sahrawi population which I represent here, rejects the use by Algeria and the polisario of the lofty cause of human rights for dubious aims, in an attempt to impede negotiations and the serious and credible efforts by Morocco, as proven by the autonomy initiative,” he added.

El Moussaoui voiced hope to see the other parties engaged in substantive negotiations, on the basis of directives reiterated by the Security Council.
