The Moroccan proposal to grant autonomy to the southern provinces, the Sahara, reflects Morocco's clear and sincere commitment to find a solution to the Sahara issue, said on Saturday in Kortrijk (north-west Belgium) a member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS).

"Morocco is ready to engage in serious and constructive negotiations on the basis of the spirit of this initiative and contribute to creating a climate of confidence," Lahcen Mahraoui said at a meeting on "the historical foundations of the Moroccan Sahara," before an audience of politicians and Belgian MPs.

The Moroccan autonomy initiative is based on "relevant proposals" of the United Nations and constitutional provisions in force in states geographically and culturally close to Morocco," he added.

"The population of the Sahara will manage their own affairs democratically, through legislative, executive and judiciary bodies,” Mahraoui said, adding that the Sahrawis will have “the financial resources needed to develop the region in all areas.”

In statements to MAP at the end of the meeting several Belgian politicians welcomed the Moroccan autonomy proposal, deeming it “serious and credible”.
