The Moroccan autonomy initiative is supported by all Sahrawis, said Thursday night in New York, Mr. Ahmed Mghizlat member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS).

"Overall, the Moroccan autonomy initiative is sought and supported by all Sahrawis," said Mghizlat before the 4th Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

"As a Saharawi citizen, member of CORCAS living in this region and knowing better than anyone the background of this fictitious problem, I say, on behalf of Sahrawis, +Yes  to autonomy + in the Sahara as an initiative likely to lead towards a solution that meets the wishes of everyone, "he said.

Initiative autonomy is consistent both with the UN resolutions, including resolution 1813, and the United Nations Charter, he noted, stressing that "it is the only viable and real solution likely to lead to a strong and deep reconciliation, ensuring the people of the Territory, not only all the universally recognized rights, but also and above all stability and sustainable development of the Maghreb and Mediterranean region.

The Sahara conflict whose persistence in addition to being unacceptable, becomes increasingly incomprehensible, he said.

"Unacceptable, because this conflict, which lasts for over thirty five years, paralyze any possibility of cooperation between the Maghreb countries, thus condemning the region to live in the shadow of a dangerous tension that may cause at any time, a general conflagration which nobody can foresee the consequences, "he warned.

"Inconceivable, because it is a conflict created from scratch by Algeria, in the context of the Cold War, first, to tackle the territorial integrity of Morocco and then to hamper its development efforts.

He explained that " at the time of independence in 1962, Algeria inherited a vast territory that colonialism cut according to his needs. Needless to say that the vastness of this country has been at the expense of neighbors whose territories have been cut from large areas that have been linked to Algeria. The great victim of this amputation is Morocco of which one third of its territory was annexed by colonialism to Algeria ".

The Sahara issue is a political problem that concerns Moroccan citizens, particularly Sahrawis, said the speaker, stressing that this problem because of the cold war has taken a regional dimension.

It is in the context of Morocco's efforts to find a solution to this problem that His Majesty King Mohammed VI created in 2006, the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, known as CORCAS. This royal initiative has created a radical change in the Sahara issue.

Indeed, the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara region is part of the new vision of Morocco to end the conflict that has lasted more than thirty five years, he said.
