The international rights NGO, International Democratic Center (IDC), on Tuesday drew the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to the critical situation of people held against their will in Tindouf camps, southwestern Algeria, for over three decades.

Speaking on behalf of IDC at the UNHRC 12th session, Moulay Ahmed Mghizlat, who is also member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), alerted that these people are deprived of the most elementary rights and suffer from serious human rights breaches.

"Our NGO wonders why Algeria, a signatory country of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, does not respect Article 4 (prohibiting slavery) of this document, which has substantially transgressed on its territory in the Tindouf camps," Mghizlat said, adding that this situation is also denounced by many people who managed to flee the camps.

The CORCAS member also shed light on the embezzlement of humanitarian aids destined to the sequestered populations, stressing that the Polisario leaders overestimate the populations' needs for aid to enrich themselves.
