The delegation of the southern provinces attending the 12th session of the Council of the UN Human Rights (CHR), called on Thursday the international community to exert pressure on the Algerian government to allow international organizations conduct a census of the populations of the Tindouf camps.

The delegation, which stresses the last visit to the camps by the High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said that such a census will reveal the exact number of these populations, and the destination of international aid sent to these camps.

"We will know then, said the delegation in a statement, that these aids are used by a group of individuals who exploit the suffering of these people to get rich."

The delegation stressed that it is unreasonable that Algeria insists on preventing the population census, while calling for increased aid to them.

"Algiers pretends to be neutral, but has tried to obstruct political settlement of the dispute over the Sahara issue, which must pass through autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty," the statement said.

The delegation of the southern provinces who took part in the 12th session of CHR is composed of El Ghallaoui Sidati, former Polisario representative to Italy, Ms. Saadani Maoualainine victim of forced deportation, Ms. Hajbouha Zubair, human rights activist and Mghizlat Moulay Ahmed, CORCAS member.
