Foreign Activities

A delegation of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) began on Monday a working visit to Austria to present the autonomy project for the Southern Provinces to the officials of this country.

The delegation has met with several officials from Austria, including the Councilor on Foreign Relations of the Federal Chancellor, Ambassador Jurgen Meindl, and the head of the International People's Party (OVP government coalition), Ms Monika Reiner, said a joint Statement by the Morocco Embassy in Vienna.

During these discussions, the delegation explained that the project of autonomy, as presented by the Kingdom, opens the door to a compromise solution to put an end to this dispute, noting that this proposal was supported by the Resolution 1813 of the Security Council (April 2008), which emphasizes the "credible and serious " character of the Moroccan initiative.

After giving an overview of socio-economic progress made in the southern provinces, the commitment of populations to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the roles played by the CORCAS in regional development, members of the delegation raised the appalling situation faced by the people sequestered in the Tindouf camps and the Algerian responsibility in the matter.

Austrian officials, whose country sits on the Security Council of the United Nations as a non-permanent member, are interested in particular in development aspects of the southern provinces and the promotion of human rights in this region, highlights the embassy's release.

They hoped that the Security Council can put an end to this issue that greatly hampers the North African construction.

During this visit that will continue until April 11, the delegation will be received by other Austrian officials, including Vice-President of the Federal Council, the chairman of the Defense Committee at the National Council, and senior officials in Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation will also meet with representatives of other political parties in Parliament and give a press conference.

Regarding exchanges on regional governance and possibilities for cooperation in this field, the delegation will travel Wednesday to the Land of Salzburg, where it will meet with Vice President of Government and the Mayor of Salzburg, Heinz Schaden.

CORCAS delegation is composed of Mr Khaddad El Moussaoui and Mrs. Kaltoum Khayat Vice-Presidents of the Council, and Mr. Abdellah Hannouni Council member. (MAP).
