Participants at a conference Monday in Brussels, called the European Union to support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as "the only realistic and feasible" solution to the Sahara issue.

The conference was organized by the Special Committee in charge of the Moroccan Sahara in Europe(CSCSME) under the theme "Visions and realities in the Moroccan Sahara."

"We want to send a message today to the European Union (...) to support the solution of reason and the future i.e. regional autonomy," said Dr. Hibato Malainine Al Abadila , member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, at the conference

"Morocco has presented a courageous solution which  guarantees the people of southern provinces considerable autonomy to manage their affairs like the major European democracies," he stressed, adding that the Security Council welcomed this serious and credible initiative.

By opting for an advanced regionalization policy to strengthen its democratic achievements and involving people in managing their affairs, Morocco has been a lesson in courage and an example of democracy and freedom, "said Malainine Al Abadila.

After reviewing the historical aspects of the Sahara region and the foundations of the nation-state of the Kingdom, Dr Malainine Al Abadila recalled the struggle of the people for the liberation of Morocco from the yoke of colonialism, "a battle that took place in perfect harmony with the glorious Alawite Throne.

The commitment of populations of southern provinces to the Moroccan Sahara, draws its essence in the historical foundations of the nation-state and the ties that these people have always had with the Moroccan dynasties, he added.

Dr. Malainine Al Abadila also highlighted the climate of freedom and democracy reignning in Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and large reforms underway in all areas, which earned it, he pointed out, an important place in the concert of Nations.

He called in this context the EU to support Morocco in its march towards progress and all initiatives to strengthen its democratic achievements and economic development.

The European Union has every interest in having a strong and dynamic partner in the region, he added.

Dr. Malainine Al Abadila invited Algeria to assume its responsibilities regarding the situation of people sequestered in Tindouf camps, reporting the suffering that he himself suffered at the time when his own brother was imprisoned by Algerians in Ouargla.

"I asked them (Algerians) to stop disrupting the development march of the Arab Maghreb and stop undermining any initiative to build our common future," he said.

For his part, the representative of CSCSME Benhammou Hassan called on the EU to intervene to end the suffering of populations sequestered in Tindouf and denounce the misuse of humanitarian aid by Polisario.

He also called for exerting pressure on Algeria, "first responsible for this human tragedy", to "respect international humanitarian law and release the innocent people it holds in its territory."
