The initial reactions reflected confusion. Polisario Front experienced major discrepancies that unveiled some facts.
The front said they are Mauritanian nationals who were deported from the area of Zouerate, and have no connection with the Sahara. Let’s analyze the issue to discover the Front’s aftershocks.
42 of returnees came from Mauritania, and are the same people that the front defended their legitimacy to vote in the referendum. According to its new position, it is clear that they were defending Mauritanian citizens, what is left of credibility in a position linked to geography rather than identity
We assure that those citizens are Sahrawis and Polisario knows better than anyone else that they are registered in the regulations of the Spanish census of 1974. Moreover, a number of them were former civilian and military officials in the Polisario Front
What can be said with regard to the second group, which includes 53 citizens who left Lhmada camps for one night before the organization of Tifariti Congress and joined Gjijimat Congress which an anti-Tifariti? Of course, Polisario’s shaking reactions did not address this aspect, everything was clear, they could not argue.
The total number of returnees actually belong to great and rooted tribes; they include military, civil officials and tribal elders who were been used by the Polisario Front until recent time, including parents who returned. However, their sons are still studying in Cuba and Algeria as part of delegations sent there by front to study
The surprise factor in this strike prompted Polisario leadership to tighten the screws on all the detainees in Lhmada camps, seriously narrowing the freedom of movement and arresting suspects. They took all these actions realizing that the mass return is a real probelm, especially since it is certain that other crowds wait the opportunity to get rid of the reality of misery and injustice done to all detainees.
The next few weeks will confirm this. The displaced persons and detainees know that mass return is the only solution left for them to find a just and final settlement to this issue
