Inter "Côte d'ivoire": Ivorian newspaper "L’Inter" said on Wednesday that broadened autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to find a political solution to the Sahara issue was supported by a significant number of Member States in the United Nations.

The newspaper added that "many reasons justify the position of the majority of Member States in the United Nations particularly that Baker plan, which had been adopted by Algeria in its decision (which was voted on 14 December), is a buried plan since it contributed to the conflict’s aggravation", noting that the "" United Nations Secretary-General said, more than two years ago, that it was impossible to apply this plan.

L’inter evoked the extent of progress towards the achievement of a political solution to the Moroccan Sahara, as recommended by Morocco through granting a broad autonomy to its Saharan regions", adding that "" We can say that the number of sympathizers with independence proposition of these territories, backed by Algeria, is increasing".

The newspaper said the issue was also presented on December 14 for vote by the United Nations Member States, but the advocates of independence thesis failed to win as 91 States abstained from voting for the Algerian project, while 31 States preferred not to participate in the voting.

It highlighted that all the Arab and Islamic countries, along with the vast majority of African States and many European countries and Latin American countries refused to support the resolution.

The newspaper concluded that the total of these countries amounted to 122 countries, i.e. two thirds of Member States at the United Nations through refraining and non-participating in the vote contributed to obstructing the passage of this resolution.
