Russia follows with great interest the situation in the Sahara conflict, said, here Monday, Russian ambassador to Rabat, Alexandre Tokovinine.

"We are for a political settlement of this conflict under the aegis of the United Nations and on the basis of the Security Council resolutions and consensus between all the parts involved," Tokovinine told MAP at a meeting with chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Sahara Affairs (CORCAS), Khalihenna Ould Errachid.

The Sahara issue was triggered in the mid-seventies by the claim of the Algeria-backed "Polisario" to separate the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara, from the North African country. Morocco retrieved these provinces from Spanish rule in line with the Madrid accords signed in 1975 with Spain and Mauritania.

The official recalled that Russia’s position over the Sahara conflict is "clear-cut and well-known," noting that the meeting he had with the CORCAS chairman (...) aims to get acquainted with the action of CORCAS and to have more details about the autonomy project Morocco is due to propose to settle the Sahara Conflict.
