The Chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (Corcas), Khalihenna Ould Errachid, met today, Tuesday June 06, 2023, with Mr. Harald Troch, MP and member of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Austrian National Council, who is on a working visit to Morocco from June 4 to 15.

During the meeting, CORCAS head discussed with the Austrian parliamentarian the latest developments in the Moroccan Sahara in the light of the Moroccan initiative granting broad autonomy to the Moroccan Sahara region.

In this regard, CORCAS Chairman highlighted the relevance of this initiative, the text of which was formulated by the Saharawis, represented by the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, and subsequently presented by the Kingdom to the United Nations in 2007. Since then, this initiative has been qualified by the Security Council as serious and credible.

The Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara region currently enjoys almost unanimous support from the international community. It is therefore the only realistic basis for a political solution to the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

In his address to the national press following the interview, Austrian MP said that autonomies are political solutions best able to meet the aspirations of local populations in terms of governance and autonomy. The Moroccan autonomy plan would therefore be the best solution for safeguarding the unity of Morocco, the only stable country in the region, while meeting the requirements of international law and the ambitions of local populations.

The meeting was attended on behalf of Corcas by the Council's Secretary General, Dr. Maouelainin Ben Khallihenna Maouelainin, and Corcas member Moulay Ahmed Mghizlat.
