The chairman of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, Khalihenna Ould Errachid, met Thursday October 1, 2015, at the Council’s headquarters with a delegation composed of Mrs Carina Hägg, former member of the Swedish Social Democratic Parliamentary Party and member of the Euro-African Parliament Association, Johan Westerholm, an expert on counter-terrorism policy from the Free World Centre.

During the meeting, attended by Dr. Maouelainin Ben Khallihenna Maouelainin,  Secretary General and Mr. Khaddad Moussaoui, Corcas Vice chairman, Mr. Khalihenna discussed the latest developments of the Sahara issue including negotiations under the United Nations auspices and 2007 solution by the Moroccan Initiative granting broad autonomy to the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty, as a practical, just and final solution to the conflict.

This initiative which received a tribute by successive resolutions by the Security Council, reflects the support it has received from the international community.

In this context, Mr. Ould Errachid emphasized the importance of maintaining by Kingdom of Sweden its official position in support of the UN process, to avoid feeding a very old regional conflict between Morocco and Algeria inherited from the period of the Cold War, saying the region is threatened by the scourges of terrorism and religious extremism while being politically fragile and constituting one of the most threatening areas for peace and security in the world.

The meeting also allowed to discuss the ancient historical relations between the two Kingdoms of Sweden and Morocco, which go back more than two centuries and the need to preserve and strengthen them.
