UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the centrality of the UN-led political process to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Responding to a question about the recent visit of the Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to the region, Guterres replied, during a press conference, that "de Mistura has made his first visit to the region. I am hopeful that the political process will resume again."
In his "message" to the parties, Guterres stressed that this issue "has lasted for so many decades in an area of the world where we see extremely serious security problems, where we see terrorism growing in the Sahel and increasingly getting closer to the coast."

"It is in everyone's interest to resolve this Sahara problem once and for all," he explained, insisting that "it is time for the parties to understand the need for dialogue, seeking a solution and not just maintaining an endless process with no hope of resolution."

This statement is the opposite of what AFP reported about the parties involved in this regional dispute. Moreover, it comes in the wake of the UN Secretary General Personal Envoy's regional visit to Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania.

This constitutes a stinging setback to the positions of Algeria and its polisario puppet, dismantling their fabrications and lies about the reality of the situation in the Moroccan Sahara on many levels.

UN Chief indeed reaffirms the centrality of the exclusively UN-led political process, facilitated by his Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, whose mandate and role are confirmed in Security Council Resolution 2602, adopted on October 29, 2021.

This resolution considers the round-table process, with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the "polisario", as the sole framework for reaching a realistic, pragmatic, lasting, mutually acceptable and compromise-based political solution to this issue.

This resolution reaffirms, moreover, the pre-eminence of Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only serious and credible solution to this regional dispute, which has been fabricated and maintained by Algeria, against the territorial integrity of its neighbor, Morocco.

By insisting on dialogue between all parties, within the framework of the UN political process, and therefore of the round-tables, the UN Secretary General reminds Algeria of its responsibilities and puts it before its obligations.

As a reminder, Algiers rejected Resolution 2602 as soon as it was adopted and declared that it would no longer take part in the political process. However, faced with international pressure and fear of being condemned by the Security Council, Algiers finally received the Personal Envoy, de Mistura, during his recent regional visit, after several weeks of vain procrastination and delaying tactics. Moreover, as in Rabat, where he met with Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, de Mistura was received in Algiers by the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Laamamra, confirming, if still necessary, the role and status of Algeria as the main party to this dispute.

By reaffirming the exclusively UN framework of the political process, the UN Secretary-General has left no room for any other actor, neither the African Union, nor the Arab League, nor the European Union, to which the Security Council does not grant any role in the Moroccan Sahara issue.

In doing so, Guterres rejects Algeria and polisario's underhanded attempts to involve regional actors in the Moroccan Sahara issue and brushes aside the lies peddled by the Algerian regime and its group of armed mercenaries about a so-called war in the Sahara.

At no point did Guterres refer to a so-called military escalation in the Kingdom's southern provinces. However, in his statement, he returned at length to the terrorist threats facing the North African and Sahel regions. It should be recalled that international reports have confirmed the proven links of the armed separatist group, the "polisario", with terrorist groups in the Sahel.
