 The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, received, Tuesday in Rabat, the diplomat Benjamin Ndagijimana who presented his consular commissions to exercise as Consul General of Burundi in Laayoune.
In a statement to the press on this occasion, Mr. Ndagijimana said he will take "by Friday" his duties as consul general in Laayoune.
The Republic of Burundi had inaugurated on February 28, 2020, a consulate general in Laayoune in the presence of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ezechiel Nibigira, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
On this occasion, Mr. Nibigira noted that the opening of a consulate general of the Republic of Burundi in Laayoune reflects the "commitment" and "loyalty" of this country to the principles of African brotherhood and international legality.
The inauguration of this diplomatic representation "is an expression of the strengthening of our cooperation which attaches great importance to good neighborliness, respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of States," he said.
He said that relations between the two countries "reach the age of reason" with the inauguration "on this memorable day" of a consulate general in Laayoune, after the opening of a Burundian embassy resident in Rabat in 2015.
On February 25, the new Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Mr. Albert Shingiro, had reiterated, in Rabat, the support of his country to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national unity in accordance with the UN Charter.
He also reaffirmed Burundi's support for the exclusive settlement of the Sahara issue by the United Nations through the autonomy plan, as the only solution to this dispute.
