Situation of chaos, human rights abuses and frustration in Tindouf camps carries many dangers for the whole region

The ambassador of Morocco in South Africa, Youssef Amrani attacked on Newzroom Afrika the fallacious theses of Polisario separatists and their mentors, highlighting the virtuous action deployed by Morocco in favor of building a prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Speaking in an hour-long interview with this channel, the third largest in South Africa and all southern Africa, Mr. Amrani exposed all the allegations used by the separatist junta and their support to maintain the untenable situation prevailing in the Tindouf camps (southwest of Algeria), where Moroccan Saharawi nationals are kept against their will on Algerian territory.

Developing an argument combining logic and tangible facts, the diplomat pointed to the serious human rights violations committed by Polisario separatists in the Tindouf camps, in particular the right to freedom of expression, association and of movement.

Access to camps by human rights organizations is subject to severe restrictions, he said, adding that Algeria, which hosts the camps on its territory and  Polisario separatists, systematically refuses to carry out a census of the populations detained in the camps.

So far, international organizations have reported diversion of humanitarian and food aid to the sequestered, said the ambassador, noting that it is time for the international community to ask for honest answers to the simple questions that arise about the number of people detained in the camps, the will of these populations and the diverted humanitarian aid.

Since 2011, the UN Security Council has not stopped calling for a census of these sequestered populations, said Mr. Amrani, wondering about the real intentions and aims of the separatists and their mentors in concealing the catastrophic situation prevailing in Tindouf.

Algeria’s responsibility for the dire humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps is clear and established, the ambassador said.

The diplomat highlighted the remarkable economic and political development in the southern provinces, where significant investments are deployed for the realization of structuring projects (basic infrastructure, roads, airports, ports …) in a climate of political freedom which guarantees local populations, like the other provinces of the Kingdom, to fully enjoy their most legitimate rights.

The diplomat stressed that the situation of chaos and frustration in the Tindouf camps is carrying many dangers for the whole region.

Difficult situations like this are exploited by extremist and terrorist groups, he said, warning of the fragile security situation in the vast expanse of the Sahel.

No one is immune to these threats, he said, highlighting the recognized efforts of Morocco, as a major player, to face threats to peace, stability and security in the region.

It is a strategy which is mainly based on a wise and intelligent deconstruction of extremist discourse with an authentic discourse, dialogue, respect for the right to be different and to live together.

Economic, social and human development is also an important pillar of the Kingdom’s active approach in this area, he added.

Concerning the relations between Morocco and South Africa, the diplomat stressed the need to deepen the dialogue with South Africa at bilateral level and within the framework of the African Union (AU) .

South Africa is currently assuming the AU presidency, he said, stressing that Morocco is in a good position to make a valuable contribution to the emergence of a peaceful and prosperous Africa.

According to the diplomat, this is a priority in the context of Morocco’s foreign policy. He added that there are vast opportunities open to the Moroccan-South African partnership, citing the great breakthroughs of Moroccan companies in many sectors with high added value in Africa, including telecommunications and financial services.
