The issue of the Moroccan Sahara is an issue of territorial integrity, said former President of the Peruvian Congress Martha Chávez Cossío, while underlining the relevance of the autonomy initiative submitted by the Kingdom to put an end to the artificial regional conflict over this issue.

In an article published by Peruvian daily "Expreso", Chávez said that an increasing number of countries, in particular in Latin America and regional blocs such as the African Union, the European Union and regional organizations, pay more attention and support a final solution to this question relating to the "territorial integrity of Morocco" through the autonomy initiative, proposed by Morocco to turn the page on a conflict that has been running for more than four decades.

The former president of the Peruvian congress recalled that the UN Security Council commended in its resolutions the seriousness and the commitment shown by the Kingdom to resolve this conflict, as well as the huge efforts made at the human and equipment levels to develop the southern provinces.

According to Chávez, the final resolution of this issue is based on a realistic and durable political commitment, which will give impetus to the development of the region's potential.

She also stressed that her recent visit to the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla helped her get informed about the situation in the region and meet the local population.

"Morocco, a friend of Peru, is an ally of the world" in the face of threats linked to religious extremism, she concluded.
