The Sahara issue is regularly discussed at the EU-Morocco Joint Parliamentary Committee which is the subject of a "favorable consensus" to the Moroccan position, said the president of the Commission, Abderrahim Atmoun.

Stressing that this issue is "the top priority of our diplomacy and high expectations of the Moroccan people," Mr Atmoun noted in a Tuesday interview published in "Today Morocco," the Moroccan autonomy proposal " is now the subject of a broad support by the international community. "

"The parties concerned must sit down and not to seek to procrastinate a solution that applies to all as the most legitimate," he pleaded, saying that "sustainable resolution of this issue is one of the major conditions to absorb the areas of lawlessness to settle in this area, basis of many trafficking and other criminal enterprises."

Referring to the relations between Morocco and France, Mr Atmoun said " contact was never broken between Paris and Rabat," stressing that bilateral relations, by their historic character and density of any kind exchanges between the two countries, "can not be permanently broken."

"The temporary misunderstandings were removed through sustained, rich and constant dialogue ", said  the president, saying he had "no doubt about the present and future of a relationship based on mutual respect between two States that have unique and remarkable connections. "

Regarding the role of parliamentary diplomacy in Morocco's international influence, the president of the EU-Morocco Joint Committee noted that through its most active representatives, Parliament has become undeniably "one of the most important players of the Moroccan influence abroad. "

To further promote this parliamentary diplomacy, it proposes to provide training to a group of parliamentarians from different sensitivities in order to "optimize their field work and to trace the information sought in the most appropriate manner," without losing sight their role in domestic politics. "This is because they will perform domestic politics that will be good for their country internationally," he argued.

As part of efforts to promote exchanges between Moroccan and European parliamentarians, the Joint Committee plans to hold this year, the first inter-parliamentary forum bringing together young parliamentarians of all sensibilities, while the second forum will bring together the European People's Party and Moroccan parties claiming the same school of thought as WFP, RNI, the Istiqlal and the CPU he indicated.

A third forum will be dedicated to the dialogue between women MPs, MEPs and Moroccan parliamentarians who bring a different perspective on trade between the two sides, said Mr. Atmoun, adding that the last Forum, will address the theme of security and fight against terrorism.
