Morocco is making efforts to "improve the situation of the population in the Sahara and involve them in decision making," he went on noting that Finland also follows "with interest" Morocco's proposal to grant a large autonomy for the Sahara inhabitants.
Morocco’s proposal to be made public soon, aims at solving the conflict that erupted in 1976 following the Polisario’s claims to separate the kingdom’s Southern provinces, known as the Sahara. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania.
