This progress is ascribed to the major construction projects aimed at providing decent housing for the population of the region, Hilale said before a Human Right Council's debate on "the Promotion and the protection of all human rights civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights including the right to development" held during the 10th session of HRC.
Hilale said housing projects in the Moroccan Sahara amount to 70,000 units, including 46.700 equipped units, 18,100 land plots and 70 ha for real estate development.
In 2008, some 20,600 housing units were built, part of the slum-free program (VSB), he said. This program aims to fight unhealthy housing, and facilitate access to real estate loans for the middle class.
The Moroccan diplomat noted that Morocco considers social housing a national priority with the aim to "democratize" access to decent housing.
He also highlighted Morocco's efforts in preserving water resources and promoting sanitation infrastructure, part of an overall economic and social development plan.
