The President of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS), Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid met Monday in Rabat with a delegation of MEPs visiting Morocco during January 25-29.

The evolution of the Sahara issue, the important progress that Morocco has achieved in terms of human rights and the human rights situation in the south, were the subjects discussed during these talks.

The delegation, composed of deputies from different political groups in the Parliament, will travel Tuesday to Laâyoune.

Below the statement that the chairman of the European Parliament Commission, Ioannis Kasoulides, gave to representatives of the media on the sidelines of the meeting:

Q: What were the subjects discussed with CORCAS President?

We had a frank meeting and we had the opportunity to exchange views on the situation in the Sahara. I hope that our visit will be beneficial for Sahrawis. We didn’t handle political matters; they are handled within the UN. We discussed humanitarian issues of human rights and how the EU could assist with this.

Q: What do you think of the Moroccan autonomy proposal?

Any proposal on the table likely to make progress is an interesting proposal. But let us not give judgments since our mandate is limited to humanitarian issues.

Q: After the appointment of Christopher Ross, what the EU can do reach a solution accepted by all?

The position of the European Union is still supporting UN efforts to achieve a lasting solution on this issue.

Q: In what context comes your visit to Morocco?

This is an ad hoc joint committee with the Maghreb committee for a visit that both deals with bilateral Morocco EU relations under the advanced status and at the same time the ad hoc committee will go to Western Sahara and talk about the humanitarian and human rights.

Statement:

This is an ad hoc joint committee with the Maghreb committee for a visit that both deals with bilateral Morocco EU relations under the advanced status and at the same time the ad hoc committee will go to Western Sahara and talk about the humanitarian and human rights.
