Morocco welcomes with satisfaction the appointment by the United Nations Secretary-General of Christopher Ross as his personal envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, a press release of the Foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Morocco took due note of the new personal envoy's mandate, by virtue of which he was mainly asked to work with the parties and the neighbouring states, on the basis of resolution 1813 adopted by the Security Council on April 30, 2008, the press release said.

This resolution, which recognizes the serious and credible efforts exerted by Morocco, calls for intense and substantial negotiations based on realism and a spirit of compromise.

Morocco noted also that the mission statement of the new personal envoy asks him to take into account the progress achieved thus far, which was fruit mainly of the momentum created by Morocco’s autonomy initiative since 2006.

Morocco noted on the other hand the tribute paid by the Secretary-General to his former personal envoy, ambassador Peter Van Walsum, and the recognition of  the important efforts he made and pertinent actions he conducted to promote a negotiated political solution to this regional dispute.

Morocco would like to assure the Secretary-General and his personal envoy of its full willingness to embark, with determination and responsibility, on this new phase to contribute to the success of their efforts, the press release went on.

The kingdom hopes that the other parties, as they are so required once more and directly, will engage, in good faith and with no reservations, in the full implementation of resolution 1813, and show the required realism and spirit of compromise to move forward towards a final political solution to this regional dispute, the press release concluded.
