King Mohammed VI denounced the humiliation and suffering inflicted upon Moroccan citizens held in the Polisario-run Tindouf camps, Algeria in "gross violation of the basic principles of international humanitarian law."

In a message on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the monarch condemned "the despicable, ludicrous exploitation of the lofty cause of human rights by the enemies of our territorial integrity."

These are "dodging responsibility by failing to respond to the unstinting efforts of the international community to reach a final political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, through substantive negotiations based on realism and compromise," he said in the message read out at a special meeting, here Wednesday, of Morocco’s Advisory Council of Human Rights (CCDH).

The king described the enemies of Morocco’s territorial integrity as “formidable abusers of human rights, as evidenced by their heinous practices in camps where people are detained against their will. Whatever unspeakable violations they perpetrate, their desperate manoeuvres will not dent our firm determination to preserve individual and collective freedoms across the country, and to remain committed to open, constructive dialogue.”

Reiterating solidarity with the population of Morocco’s Southern Provinces “wherever they may be,” the king stressed that the north African kingdom will “spare no effort to enable them to exercise their legitimate right to return freely, and to lead a life of dignity alongside the overwhelming majority of their parents and relatives who are already settled in their homeland.”

He recalled that, in a bid to end this artificial dispute which impedes the right of Maghreb peoples to integrated development, “Morocco submitted a daring autonomy proposal based on respect for human rights and the release of creative energies,” stressing that this proposal was welcomed by the international community and the UN as “serious and credible because of its compatibility with international standards.”

“Whatever the circumstances, Morocco will remain committed to an irreversible policy based on democracy and human rights, in a united, advanced and solidarity-based nation,” the king concluded.
