Deputy Permanent Ambassador representing Morocco to the United Nations, Mr. Hamid Chabar, denounced on Tuesday "deliberate biased and narrow" reading made by the Algerian representative on the evolution of the Sahara issue at a General Assembly debate on the annual report of the Security Council.

The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Mourad Benmehidi, ignoring the recent Security Council resolutions on this issue, also hailed by his country, saw fit to raise the issue of the Sahara to illustrate the failure of fifteen members.

Using his right to reply, Mr. Chabar recalled the recent resolutions unanimously adopted by the Council members.

"The Security Council has not failed. It has adopted three founding and substance resolutions through which it welcomes the  proposal of autonomy presented by Morocco and its serious and credible efforts and called parties to carry out substantive negotiations and show realism and a spirit of compromise to hasten the advent of a final political solution to this dispute, "said Chabar.

The Moroccan diplomat said that "the momentum was really triggered by the Moroccan proposal, which has spawned four rounds of negotiations triggering a process which benefits today from the support of the international community" .

"This is an important milestone in addressing this issue by the United Nations. The international community has the political and moral duty to fully support and encourage, for the stability of a region faced with new threats such as terrorism, "he said, stressing that Morocco" remains actively engaged in seeking a political solution to this dispute in accordance with Security Council resolutions whose content is shared today by the General Assembly ".

The representative of Morocco finally expressed the hope that "Algeria will abandon once and for all the duplicity that has always characterized its position on this point", reiterating the Kingdom’s call to build a united Maghreb.
