« This initiative is fully in line with international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the parameters set by the Security Council in favor of a political solution, » the representative of Burundi told the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.
The diplomat, who was speaking Tuesday, welcomed the growing international momentum in favor of the autonomy initiative.
He also expressed his country’s « unwavering » support for the political process aimed at achieving a definitive solution to this artificial conflict under the exclusive aegis of the UN Secretary-General and facilitated by his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, noting that this process is essential for regional stability.
The Burundian delegation called for the rapid resumption of the round table process, in the same format and with the same participants, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario in accordance with Security Council resolutions including 2703.
The diplomat praised the vast investment program undertaken in the southern provinces, noting that this dynamic has greatly contributed to the empowerment of local populations, the improvement of human development indices and the promotion of human rights in the region.
He also welcomed the participation of Sahara’s democratically elected representatives in the regional seminars of the C24 at its annual sessions, as well as in the two round tables held in Geneva.
« This highlights Morocco’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and the political process, » he pointed out. The diplomat, who underlined the need to maintain MINURSO’s role in monitoring the ceasefire, welcomed Morocco’s full cooperation with the Mission and its respect for the ceasefire, calling on other parties to do the same.
He also urged other parties to refrain from any action that could jeopardize the political process and to stop obstructing the movements and activities of the UN Mission.
