 The Moroccan people commemorate Saturday, with joy and pride, the 68th anniversary of Morocco's Independence Day, a pivotal stage in the history of the Kingdom sealing the triumph of the Throne and the people to free themselves from the yoke of colonialism.
Engraved in the history of the Kingdom, Independence Day, celebrated every November 18, commemorates a strong moment in history, in this case the historic speech of November 18, 1955 by the Father of the Nation, The late His Majesty Mohammed V announcing the end of the protectorate and the liberation of the Homeland.
“We are delighted to be able to announce the end of the guardianship regime and the protectorate and the advent of freedom and independence,” declared Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Youssef on November 18, 1955 on his return from exile in the company of the Royal family.
“We have moved from the battle of the small Jihad to that of the great Jihad,” continued the late Sovereign.
The great “jihad” is none other than that of modernization, consolidation of the State, the completion of national unity and development. A torch subsequently carried by His late Majesty Hassan II and by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in order to meet the challenges of defending territorial integrity and achieving sustainable development.
This celebration thus allows rising generations to remember the countless sacrifices of the sons of the Nation, particularly in August 1953 after the colonial authorities decided to exile the symbol of the Nation, the late SM Mohammed V, his companion in the struggle, the late SM Hassan. II and the rest of the Royal Family.
This exile provoked the popular revolution, reinforced by the determination of the Father of the Nation to continue the struggle and the launch of the operations of the liberation army, thus leading the colonizer to capitulate and accept the return to the Motherland of the late HM Mohammed V.
The Revolution was followed by the completion of territorial unity under the leadership of the late HM Hassan II, the recovery of Sidi Ifni in 1969, the southern provinces after the organization of the Green March in 1975 and then the province of Oued Eddahab on August 14, 1979.
This process continues under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, who has ensured since his enthronement to lay the foundations for the economic modernization of the Kingdom and the consecration of the values of democracy and citizenship by placing the Moroccan citizen at the center of this big project.
The commemoration of this anniversary is therefore an opportunity to pay tribute to the father of the Nation, the late Mohammed V, who was able to lead the Kingdom into a new era marked by the victory of law over injustice and dignity over enslavement. It also gives rising generations the opportunity to appreciate the full extent of the sacrifices made by their ancestors to bequeath them a country strong in its values of democracy and sovereignty.
