In a statement to the press after this meeting, Mr. Ould Errachid said that the Republic of Lithuania strongly supports the autonomy initiative in the Sahara as the only possible realistic solution to this issue.

He pointed out that Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga showed good knowledge of the circumstances in which this dispute arose, expressing her understanding of Morocco’s approach to find a solution by respecting the rights of Saharans in the conduct of their affairs under Moroccan sovereignty as well as the matching process with the law and international legitimacy.

After being informed of the tasks of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs, Mr. Khalihenna highlighted that Lithuania, as a member of the European Union, adopts the Moroccan proposal to resolve this problem through dialogue and negotiation on the basis of reaching a political compromise.

It is noteworthy that the President of the Republic of Lithuania started on Monday an official visit to Morocco at the head of an important delegation, at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
