The Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara is the only "credible" and "salutary" outcome for peace and stability in the region, said Friday Comoros Foreign Minister, Dhoihir Dhoulkamal.

"We would like to congratulate Morocco and encourage it for its initiative on the autonomy plan which seems to us to be the only credible and beneficial outcome for peace and stability in the region," he told MAP on the occasion of his participation in the Ministerial Conference in Support of the Autonomy Initiative under Morocco's Sovereignty, held virtually at the invitation of the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America.

"Morocco has a very good vision that is in line with the sense of history and that will help establish stability in the region. That is why we have always been on the side of our Moroccan brothers in this wise vision of peace and stability," Dhoulkamal stated.

"We have supported, from the outset and unconditionally", the efforts of the Kingdom for the settlement of the Moroccan Sahara issue, especially the autonomy initiative, he added.

"Comoros and President Azali Assoumani want to thank HM King Mohammed VI for all the efforts made to reach a settlement to this issue," the Comorian official underlined.

According to him, Comoros is "proud" to have been the first African and Arab country to establish a consular representation in Laayoune. "We were followed by twenty countries in this process (...) We are happy," the official noted.

Today, "we welcome the opening of a US consulate in Morocco's Southern provinces and we are pleased to see the United States support and accompany the Moroccan autonomy initiative," Dhoulkamal said.

The Comorian FM also voiced "satisfaction" at witnessing the success of the Moroccan diplomacy and the support of many countries today for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty.
