A Sahrawi NGO urged the European Commission (EC) to step in to lift the siege imposed on the populations sequestered in Tindouf camps, southwestern Algeria.

"As outlined in our previous messages, we draw your attention on the acts that have been, so far, committed by the Algerian authorities against the sequestered families," said the "comité spécial chargé du Sahara marocain en Europe" (CSCSME) President El Hassane Benhammou in a letter sent to the EC President.

The Polisario Front, a separatist group, laying claims to the Moroccan Sahara, was condemned by many NGOs for its inhuman practices and human rights breeches.

The committee calls for a "fast and urgent" intervention of the EC to put an end to these "unjustified acts to compel Polisario and Algeria, the country responsible for these acts that are perpetrated on its soil, to lift the siege imposed on the families and grant them freedom of circulation and expression to return to their homeland, Morocco,” reads the letter.

The Committee had recently sent a letter to the European Commission urging it to look into the tragic situation of the sequestered families in Tindouf camps and to condemn "the sordid conditions in prisons endured by these families."
