Peru understands and supports the Moroccan position, which tends to search for a political solution to the Sahara conflict, this statement was made by Mr Luis Gonzales Posada, the speaker of the Peruvian parliament, who is currently visiting Morocco.

The preservation of the Moroccan territorial unity constitutes “a security for the international community, in order to avoid the appearance of new separatist tendencies” Mr Posada added during a meeting which took place on Thursday with the leader of the House of Representatives Mr Mustapha Mansouri

Peru believes that separatist theses will do nothing but infuriate tensions and trigger conflicts in the region, said, here Thursday, Visiting Peruvian speaker, Luis Gonzales Posada, calling upon the countries concerned by peace to back Morocco's efforts and the ambitious project it suggests to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara.
The Sahara dispute was triggered in the mid-seventies by the claim of the "Polisario" to separate the Moroccan southern provinces from the motherland, after they were retrieved from Spanish rule in line with the Madrid accords signed in 1975.
Last April, Morocco presented a proposal to grant substantial autonomy to its Southern Provinces, to the United Nations, which facilitated two rounds of talks between the parties in Manhasset (outskirts of New York) in June and August. A third round is scheduled but no date or venue has been set yet.
The meeting also tackled economic cooperation, as the two MPS voiced hope to hoist trade exchanges to the level of political ties and to benefit from the strategic position of the two countries at the regional level.
