The kingdom of Morocco is celebrating the 32nd anniversary of the green march organized by late king Hassan II, it was a strategic mass demonstration to recover the Western Sahara which is an integral part of Morocco, and linked to it by a legal and historical relations .On November 6, 1975, around 350,000 Moroccan civilians converged on the city of Tarfaya in southern Morocco, and waited for a signal from the late king Hassan II to cross into Western Sahara.

The marchers brandished Moroccan flags, banners calling for the return of Moroccan Sahara; in addition of the Qur’an and photographs of the king, the colour green for the March’s name was intented as a symbol of Islam.

After over three decades of recovering the Sahara, there is no doubt that major investments were realised in the southern provinces, and helped tremendously to build a new useful and vital infrastructure, to promote social and economic activities for local population, and to improve the level of life particularly within the poorest of sahraouis

Funds invested all over the Sahara area led to the realisation of a number of vital economic and social projects. During the last 30 years or so, the region which was nothing but a desert, became a huge building site thinks to coherent economic strategy and political choices, well planned and thoughtful, and also to a n ambitious policy at service of the inhabitants of the region under the leadership of late King Hassan II, and his successor His Majesty the King Mohammed VI.

Only the Sahraouis  could in fact feel and acknowledge the real value of the progress realised in the Sahara, as there is a huge difference between the Sahara before 1975 , and the region in 2007, simply because priorities( such as : drinking water, electricity, the creation of a modern network of cleaning up, a number  products of infrastructure all over the region , and particularly in the main towns) were dealt with, in order to create a positive atmosphere for development and economic prosperity.

Other priorities during last 15 years or so were dealt with among others: transport, communication, thousands of new accommodations, hospitals, schools, ports, airports and a number of other social, educational, and cultural projects.

This vital and important effort which lasted around three decades made out of the Sahara a truly amazing modern region, the socio-economic development of this region of the kingdom of Morocco came as a result of a huge investment effort to promote all the components of the economic and social life of the southern provinces, and to make sure that the economic growth is an answer to the aspirations of the local population.

The young King of Morocco opted in recent years for the creation of the agency for promotion, social and economic development for the southern provinces of a global budget of 1410 billion DHs. This agency deals directly with the infrastructure, development of various industrial zones, in addition to the key economic sector of fishing, and other activities such as the agricultural sector, and the reinforcement of programmes dealing with the creation of jobs.

The central Moroccan government is not sparing any efforts to develop the local economy of the Sahara region, increase the level of life among the poorest social class, promote education, and health within a particularly dynamic framework, and a strategy vision aiming at improving the necessary infrastructure, and creating a dynamic generator for jobs.
